This AMAZING eclipse will be especially dark since the Moon will be closer to Earth than it was during 2017 Great American Solar Eclipse.

In the United States:

The eclipse path crosses 13 U.S. states.  The length of totality is nearly 4½ minutes – almost two minutes longer than the Great American Eclipse of 2017!

The duration of entire path of totality over U.S is just over 1 hour, beginning in Texas at 1:27pm CDT and ending in Maine at 3:35 pm EDT.

In Chicago, Illinois, the partial eclipse begins at 12:51pm CDT with totality occurring at 2:07pm CDT (totality from approx 1:58 pm CDT -2:07pm CDT). In Chicago, the partial eclipse ends at 3:22pm CDT

Through Illinois, the speed of the Moon’s shadow will accelerate from about 1830 miles per hour to about 1975 miles per hour.

According to NASA, the path of totality, where the Moon totally blocks the Sun, and reveals its outer atmosphere – the Corona- is much wider during the upcoming total solar eclipse than it was during the eclipse in 2017.  In 2017, the Moon was a bit farther away from Earth and its path ranged from about 62 to 71 miles wide.  During the upcoming April 8, Eclipse, the path over North America will range between 108 and 122 miles wide, covering significantly more ground while it crosses.

NASA also says that the 2024 eclipse path will pass over more cities and densely populated areas than in 2017.  An estimated 31.6 million people live in the path of totality this year, compared to 12 million in 2017 and an additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

During a Solar Eclipse, the Moon passes between Earth and Sun and blocks the light of the Sun with its shadow.  This occurs even though the Moon is 400 times smaller than the Sun, because the Moon is 400 times closer to the Earth.

Astrologically, the Moon represents the unconscious, and/or emotional side of life and, during a solar eclipse, the Moon’s unconscious/emotional energies take center stage – possibly even obscuring or over-shadowing the conscious part of life or one’s conscious intentions, or will. Similarly, during a solar eclipse, the feminine energy is thought to take takes precedence over the masculine – for a few minutes -lol! Reminder, everyone has both masculine and feminine energy within us!

During an eclipse season, and especially during such a powerful Solar Eclipse passing overhead, time itself can seem to be distorted, alternately speeding up and slowing down.  Time often doesn’t seem to be as linear either, with past, present and future energies seeming to alternate or blend — which of course can feel discombobulating.  Many folks might feel less grounded. Again, the energies being featured so profoundly, are much less logical and more emotional or subjective.  It’s important to remember that less logical does not mean less intelligent and in a world where “masculine” energies and priorities are often over-emphasized, this could be a significant opportunity for regaining some balance.  We might notice that energies, issues, or motivations that we’re typically less conscious of are being brought to the foreground. The less visible is being made more visible. The unconscious is being made more conscious.  Some folks might say that the divine feminine is 400 times more accessible than it normally is, so as wobbly or as unusual as some of this might feel, it could also be really important and valuable, perhaps helping to shift the focus toward wholeness.

During a Solar Eclipse, the Moon blocks electromagnetic energy from Sun (infrared, visible and ultraviolet light) which affects Earth’s magnetic field.  This could be thought of as a powerful cosmic reboot, or a super powerful New Moon correlating with significant endings and new beginnings.

Astrologers notice that the effects of such a powerful Solar Eclipse, with its potentially wobbling time distortions can be felt for weeks or months prior to the Eclipse and for up to a year afterward – some say as much as 2 years and 8 months afterward!  So, if possible, consider treating the week prior to the Eclipse kinda like a Mercury retrograde on steroids – be gentle with yourself and maybe/perhaps try not to make any major life decisions or commitments if it’s not necessary.  Do what seems reasonable to stay calm and grounded and remember that Eclipses are remarkable, powerful and natural occurrences – so no need necessarily to freak out.

This year’s remarkable New Moon Solar Eclipse occurs in the courageous, pioneering sign of Aries, with Chiron, Mercury retrograde and Venus also traveling through this independent sign. We all have Aries somewhere in our astrology charts, so

it could be really useful to align with the goal-oriented part of Aries energy and set some goals for the next year or so. Setting even 1 or 2 goals could help in charting a “new” course in life.  How/where would you like to: be more courageous? take new action? blaze a trail? begin again?

Also, very relevant in Spring 2024:

*** WARNING: DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN.  Looking directly at the Sun without proper eye protection is unsafe.  Please consult with your eye doctor or physician for instructions on safe eclipse viewing.

NASA further warns: “Do not look at the un-eclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device.

Do not do so even while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer in front of your eyes – the concentrated solar rays could damage the filter and enter your eyes, causing serious injury.” ***
