On Wednesday, September 22 at 2:21pm CT, the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s Equator. At this moment, the Earth’s axis is neither tilted away from nor towards the Sun. The Autumnal Equinox initiates the start of the Fall season in the northern hemisphere and, in Western Astrology, the Fall Equinox is also when the Sun enters O degrees of Libra, the “relationship sign.”
Why is it called the Autumnal or Fall equinox?
Since night and day are nearly the exact same length all over the world – 12 hours – the event is called the equinox, which in Latin, means ‘equal night’.
Solstices and equinoxes mark key stages in the astronomical cycle of the earth as the balance of light shifts to make for longer days or longer nights. Therefore, these are really powerful times to check in with our human experience of living on this Earth – and to set some intentions that help align us with our true selves.
You may also notice that on the equinox, the sun rises directly in the east and sets directly in the west, whereas at other times in the year, it appears off-center if you’re facing those directions.
THIS YEAR’S EQUINOX is noteworthy for many reasons including how it’s different from last year’s Equinox. Luckily, during this year’s Fall Equinox, planet Jupiter offers extra protection, support and encouragement for participating in all our relationships.
