Context: The archetypal symbols of astrology have been around for millennia, and basically, astrology is a language that helps us map and understand our connections with the energy of a living universe. Astrology allows us to track archetypal human experiences and knowable life cycles.

In other words, the planets are not in charge, and do not cause or compel us to do anything. The same divine intelligence that created us also created the planets in our solar system.  Perhaps the best way to consider how astrology works is, when we look up into the sky at the planets, asteroids and key points in our solar system, it’s like looking into a giant cosmic mirror, reflecting our human experiences, energetic cycles, and evolution back to us.

The 2024 Summer Solstice occurs on Thursday, June 20, 2024 when the Sun enters O degrees of Cancer, at 3:51pm CT.  The Summer Solstice initiates the start of the Summer season in the northern hemisphere. It’s the day when we have the most daylight all year, as the Sun travels its longest path through the sky.

At Summer Solstice, the North Pole is tilted about 23.4° (23°27´) toward the Sun.

Summer Solstice, aka the Cancer Ingress:

Astrologically, the Summer Solstice highlights Cancer energy, what we nourish and cultivate in our lives as we begin the summer season of manifestation and growth.  Summer is about the growing and blossoming of life, celebrating and enjoying the nutrients that connect us to one another and help us feel safe and alive. At the solstice, we celebrate the richness and fullness of life and the cleansing, strengthening light of the Sun.  In astrology, Cancer represents the mother and the family story, where we put down roots and establish a sense of belonging. It is our emotional, feeling, nature. Cancer energy is quite sensitive, vulnerable, and protective. At times, Cancer energy can be easily overwhelmed, yet at its best Cancer is a receptive, nurturing and tenacious energy that considers how best to respond to what’s needed.

This critical, first degree of Cancer is quite energizing and carries the symbolic energy of a sailor ready to hoist a new flag to replace an old one.  Generally, the Summer Solstice affords a timely, energetic opportunity to go inward, to recharge and restore our emotional energies and our sense of belonging in our own bodies and “families” and to inhabit our own stories.

Each year’s Summer Solstice chart describes the major energetic themes for the next quarter as well as the second half of the year, when we’re likely to see developments that emanate from what is expressing and stirring at this time.

This year, five planets, from Mercury out to Jupiter, are traveling through different signs of the zodiac than they were last year, giving this year’s solstice its own unique   significance and meaning!  Read More about THIS YEAR’S SOLSTICE chart…

Continue Here from Mailer:

This year’s solstice energy could correlate with people craving calmer, cozier, comforts with friends and family more than lively, flamboyant, adventures as planets Mercury and Venus join the Solstice Sun in Cancer, while action oriented Mars contributes complimentary and somewhat magical energy from sensual Taurus terrain. Cancer and Taurus energies blend well and highlight simpler, more classic, summer pleasures centered around food, nature, music, and water – anything that can be enjoyed at a more relaxed pace and usually closer to home… gardens, hammocks, cook-outs, walks, swims, sitting next to a stream or lake. The strength and physicality of this determined astrological blend, could also suggest some hard work going into summer projects around the house or garden.

This Taurus and Cancer blend also helps us to understand and prioritize simple routines which support rest and quiet. They emphasize the value and importance of connection, the solace and comfort gained from healthy retreat, and the need to relax and recharge over-worked nervous systems. However, a challenging square from nebulous Neptune could heighten any spacey, lethargic, or vague energy, which could then correlate with some regrettable carelessness. The desire for a good nap or to disappear into a good book or favorite show could be appropriate, but be aware that laziness, apathy, or retreat into escapist behaviors could completely take over – especially if drugs or alcohol are involved. It could be all too easy to get lost, or lose track of time or belongings, or what’s cooking on the stove or grill, or who’s supposed to be watching the kids or pets etc. In other words, remember to pay attention and take common sense precautions.

Some other common occurrences with challenging Neptune energies are distorted perceptions, insecure feelings, or over-sensitivity. Compassion and the desire to help are good, but over-identifying with the suffering of others to the point of overwhelm, could render us unable to actually contribute or provide any genuine assistance. We could also be a bit more gullible and susceptible to scams, especially those that play on our concern for others, or our families, or homes. Since basic level access to food, shelter and water are highlighted this Summer, it might be rewarding to consciously choose to donate time or money at a local food bank or sustainable community garden or affordable housing project or initiative of some kind.

Even though the Moon is moving through the optimistic, adventure-seeking sign of Sagittarius in the Solstice chart, the Moon is also squared by serious Saturn, which tends to correlate with feeling like our proverbial wings have been clipped. For a variety of reasons, summer travel could prove to be more challenging and could require more planning and preparation than usual. The weight of duties, repairs, and obligations might raise doubts about whether our optimism is warranted or if our plans are really feasible.   In addition to the prominent Taurus/Cancer energy, the Moon/Saturn square might increase the likelihood of more people opting for stay-cations and embracing the adventure of improving our living situation and home life.

However, planet Jupiter, now moving through the curious sign of Gemini, suggests that many folks won’t forego travel altogether, but might focus instead on road trips, long weekends away, or local cultural events and festivals. Jupiter’s positive connection with Pluto this year reminds us of the old adage that “where there’s a will, there’s a way” so we might just need to persevere in our efforts to explore, to learn, to study and grow.  This combination supports our ambitions and efforts or desires to improve our lot in life, although we might tend to overdo or push too hard at times, so knowing when to ease up, could be important.

In fact, powerful Pluto connects with a few key areas of the Solstice chart again this year, weaving its evolutionary themes of transformation throughout the summer.  Many of us continue to seek a new, or increased, sense of purpose, direction, or connection, and with so much soul-searching going on, it’s important to be aware of increased tendencies toward black-or-white, all-or-nothing type thinking.  Getting into battles of will with others if /when we feel thwarted or frustrated, is not likely to go well. However, there might be times when it’s appropriate to stand our ground without retaliating. Similarly, throwing our hands up in despair and just giving up will not likely be useful either – unless that’s more of a temporary measure, for taking some time away from a problem or situation in order to re-group.  Persevering Pluto’s presence calls us to hang in there and know that we can embrace our life’s healing journey; to let go and give away the past; and to keep learning how to let go of obstacles that sometimes block us from feeling like we’re a part of life and/or close to others.

Ideally, this year’s Summer solstice energy could help us to reinvent or reinvigorate some nurturing and nourishing summertime traditions that support the ongoing process of living, blossoming, and maturation.
