The archetypal symbols of astrology have been around for millennia and, basically, astrology is a language that helps us map and understand our connections with the energy of a living universe.  Astrology allows us to track archetypal human experiences and knowable life cycles.

Context: The planets are not in charge.  They do not cause or compel us to do anything. The same divine intelligence that created us also created the planets in our solar system.  Perhaps the best way to consider** how astrology works is, when we look up into the sky at the planets, asteroids, and key points in our solar system, it’s like looking into a giant cosmic mirror, reflecting our human experiences, energetic cycles, and evolution back to us.  Astrologers have been observing the movements of the planets for many millennia and witnessing the correlations between planetary movements and human experiences.  The planetary movements and our cycles of consciousness and growth are part of the SAME dance of life.  So, if we’re experiencing something here on earth, either as individuals or as societies, trained astrologers look up into the cosmic mirror and see those same energetic themes expressing in the movements of the planets.

Since we know the movements of the planets ahead of time, we have an understanding of the types of energies, cycles, and themes that are coming; these understandings can help us to choose to engage more consciously with those themes and cycles, allowing the movements of the planets to function like allies, providing useful information, meaning and context for our soul’s journey through this life.  And since each of us is unique, carrying our own energetic astrological signatures from the moment we took our first breath, the current positions of the planets will interact with our individual astrology charts in unique ways.  This is the work of astrologers: to study the current movements of the planets in relation to your birth chart and your journey, not to make predictions set in stone, but rather to offer information about the range of energetic experiences associated with the cycles activated and energized in your birth chart by the current planetary movements.

**did you know that consider is Latin for “with the stars”?

Astrology 2021, the Spring Equinox, and Nature’s New Year

In the early morning hours of Saturday, March 20, 2021, the Sun enters O degrees of Aries, initiating the Spring season in the northern hemisphere and starting the astrological and energetic year.  During the equinox, the Sun shines directly on the equator, creating almost exact equality in the length of light between day and night. The Equinox occurs at the exact same moment around the world, and looking toward the horizon, the sun rises directly in the east and sets directly in the west, whereas at other times in the year, the Sun appears off center if you’re facing those directions.

Spring Equinox, aka the Aries Ingress

This year’s Equinox carries its own distinctive, challenging and promising energies and sets the tone for the next 12 months and suggests guidelines for what to focus on for at least the next quarter, until the summer solstice.  The Spring Equinox affords us a genuine, energetic opportunity to start our year.  This is a natural time to set goals and declare our intentions for the next 12 months – to plant seeds and begin again.

2021 Spring Equinox Discussion:  What a difference a year makes!

This year’s Equinox chart is noteworthy for many reasons including how different it is from last year’s Equinox chart.  Although we are still coping with the serious and deadly  coronavirus pandemic and the accompanying economic challenges, there have been many energetic changes in the last 12 months.

The big shift underway in 2021 is away from the very practical demands and strategic instructions of the physical earth signs, with a recent preponderance of Capricorn energy, to the ideas, perspectives and information of the intellectual air signs. Last year there were 6 planets in earth signs! while this year only 2 remain; and three of the noticeable players, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn join the Moon in Air signs; with Mercury and Venus occupying the mutable water terrain of Pisces.  As discussed in greater detail in previous blog post, Jupiter and Saturn’s Great Conjunction in air signs at the Winter Solstice, completed a 200 year cycle of great conjunctions in Earth signs, and started 170 years of great conjunctions in Air signs. This year’s Spring Equinox is the first since this new era of great conjunctions in air signs began last December.

Pluto will stay in Capricorn until March 2023, when it also moves into the sign of Aquarius, shortly after the 2023 spring equinox. Notably, dwarf planet Pluto in Capricorn still figures prominently in this year’s equinox chart, leading the other planets in a fairly tight “bowl” formation AND rising in the East.  Last year’s equinox offered an even tighter “bundle” formation with Jupiter leading.

What does it mean?  Pluto moving in this degree of Capricorn symbolizes a mountain pilgrimage and I believe that we’re being asked to release the past, grieve our losses where appropriate, and accept the journey of our highest calling. This energy suggests that we each prepare and do our parts now, whatever that is. We each have our own mountain to climb.  We could access deep inspiration and strength as potent, persevering Pluto continues to lead the way until the summer solstice.  Pluto offers its well known intensity toward the need to have a mission or destiny, while Capricorn reminds us to have integrity and to use discipline in order to progress.  This could be an important time of applying what we’ve learned in useful ways, even as we strive to un-learn, or let go of, behavior patterns that have limited us too much in the past.  We’re getting ready. We’re shedding baggage. We’re getting stronger.

The preponderance of air sign energy, including Mars in Gemini makes it easier (less onerous, dutiful and obligatory) and perhaps even exciting to meet our obligations to be who we were born to be and to do what we must to contribute to the fulfillment of our souls plans in meaningful ways. It’s easier to see where our paths connect with, and diverge from, others without getting bogged down in crippling comparisons. We can detach and listen more easily to our own internal guidance and partner with others as appropriate.  With eyes on the prize, we rise.  At its best, Aquarius energy knows that we are doing our part as a member of a team and that other team members might not have the exact same assignmment as we do.  We win when the team wins. In some ways, we might be “leaner and meaner” than we were in previous years, having shed some of the heaviness or “skin” of the past.  Aquarius likes the future and thoughts of change and helps us to move forward – onward and upward!

One of the great blessings of the spring equinox is the courage that comes with the Sun in pioneering, brave Aries.  However, this year, the sometimes impetuous Sun in Aries receives a softer, more cooperative energy from sweet Venus, still travelling through mystical, creative, Pisces terrain. Venus in Pisces reminds us to listen to our inner, mystical selves and to have compassion for ourselves and others.  Similar to last year, Mercury the communicator, associated with information, learning and commerce will also be traveling through gentler Pisces terrain while harmonizing with revolutionary Uranus, the modern ruler of Aquarius, currently in Taurus. This connection helps to amplify intuitive insights and practical opportunities to preview and implement new ideas, structures and methods that benefit the larger community.  Different from last year, is the challenging relationship between communicator Mercury and energetic Mars which could correlate with too much information, impatience, intolerance, or combative attitudes. Positively, spirited debate could open up new avenues of change or adjustment. p.s. beware the hot mic!

There is also a shift in Neptune’s contribution this year with a challenging square from the Moon so we’ll need to be mindful of over-idealizing, fantasy, confusion or outright deception.  It could be wise to go slowly when making any important decisions especially if someone or something seems too good to be true.  Pay attention to escapist, addictive tendencies including any unhealthy relationship issues like playing the victim, or conversely, wanting to “rescue” someone else.  The pull to gossip could also be tempting which would not be productive and might possibly backfire.

More good news from Venus!  Last year, Venus was in its home sign of Taurus and made  a great relationship with powerful Pluto.  This year, Venus is exalted in its higher octave expression in Pisces and forms another supportive connection with potent Pluto as it leads  leads the symbolic and energetic call for transformation until the Summer Solstice.  Pluto and Venus correlate with invitations to face important truths and transform our   relationships, including who gets to hold power in the relationship, especially our relationships with women, the Earth, money and the economy.

More differences this year:  the Moon and Mars are energizing the north node of the Moon which is now in Gemini until next January 2022.  The north node shifted last May 2020 from the protective, nurturing sign of Cancer, and while in Gemini terrain, emphasizes the need to communicate, see each other as neighbors, consider other points of view, de-personalize, have fun, and look at information and data from a variety of credible sources that can inform the process. The equinox energy affords opportunities to open our minds and course correct with updated information. The Moon and Mars, along with Saturn, suggest that we’ve reached the part of the journey where we can get moving, right the ship, and begin to think in more mature ways.  It’s important to avoid getting scattered or over-excited and overstimulated, but we can begin to come around now and use our smarts – and learn from other perspectives as well.  Strategic support from solid Saturn in brilliant, ingenius Aquarius can help us to outline plans for our futures that previously eluded us  somehow.  At long last, we just might discover a way forward.  However, the ongoing presence of the Saturn/Uranus square also suggests that progress will need to include some blend of compromise between the old and the new and that neither extreme of following only the tried and true paths nor outright rebellion will likely succeed.
