The archetypal symbols of astrology have been around for millenia and, basically, astrology is a language that helps us map and understand our connections with the energy of a living universe.  Astrology allows us to track archetypal human experiences and knowable life cycles.

Context: The planets are not in charge.  They do not cause or compel us to do anything. The same divine intelligence that created us also created the planets in our solar system.  Perhaps the best way to consider** how astrology works is, when we look up into the sky at the planets, asteroids and key points in our solar system, it’s like looking into a giant cosmic mirror, reflecting our human experiences, energetic cycles, and evolution back to us.  Astrologers have been observing the movements of the planets for many millenia and witnessing the correlations between planetary movements and human experiences.  The planetary movements and our cycles of consciousness and growth are part of the SAME dance of life.  So, if we’re experiencing something here on earth, either as individuals or as societies, trained astrologers look up into the cosmic mirror and see those same energetic themes expressing in the movements of the planets.

Since we know the movements of the planets ahead of time, we have an understanding of the types of energies, cycles and themes that are coming; these understandings can help us to choose to engage more consciously with those themes and cycles, allowing the movements of the planets to function like allies, providing useful information, meaning and context for our soul’s journey through this life.  And since each of us is unique, carrying our own energetic astrological signatures from the moment we took our first breath, the current positions of the planets will interact with our individual astrology charts in unique ways.  This is the work of astrologers: to study the current movements of the planets in relation to your birth chart and your journey, not to make predictions set in stone, but rather to offer information about the range of energetic experiences associated with the cycles activated and energized in your birth chart by the current planetary movements.

**did you know that consider is Latin for “with the stars”?

Astrology, the Spring Equinox and Nature’s New Year

On the evening of Thursday, March 19, 2020, at 7:50pm CDT, the Sun enters O degrees of Aries, followed on March 24th by the New Moon in Aries, initiating the start of the Spring season in the northern hemisphere and heralding the start of the astrological year.  During the equinox, the Sun shines directly on the equator, creating almost exact equality in the length of light between day and night. The Equinox occurs at the exact same moment around the world, and looking toward the horizon, the sun rises directly in the east and sets directly in the west, whereas at other times in the year, the Sun appears off center if you’re facing those directions.

Spring Equinox, aka the Aries Ingress

This year’s Equinox carries its own distinctive, challenging and promising energies and sets the tone for the next 12 months and suggests guidelines for what to focus on for at least the next quarter, until the summer solstice.  The Spring Equinox affords us a genuine, energetic opportunity to start our year.  This is a natural time to set goals and declare our intentions for the next 12 months – to plant seeds and begin again.

2020 Spring Equinox Discussion:  Challenges AND Reason for Hope

This year’s equinox takes place during the ever-changing, serious landscape of corona virus and not surprisingly, the Equinox chart is noteworthy for many reasons.  As discussed in greater detail in January 2020 talk,   https://www.theresemurphy.com/astrology-discussion-2020-forecast/

we are all still reverberating from January’s PROFOUND Saturn-Pluto conjunction in restrictive Capricorn which correlates with FOUNDATIONAL CHANGE and endings IN THE MAJOR STRUCTURES and institutions and systems of our lives, our societies, governments, workplace, health care, etc – think of just about any major construct in the life of an individual, a neighborhood, or a society and they’ve all been under massive stress and pressure to evolve.  Indeed, with this Spring Equinox, four planets – Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto – are traveling in tight formation through Capricorn while nestled, along with the rest of the planets, between the cosmic lovers, Venus and Mars in approximately 120 degrees of the zodiac.

There is much that can be said about these energies, which represent a turbo-charged call for us to align with the power of our intentions, integrity, and our sense of deep purpose, in challenging, demanding and invigorating ways. On a practical or more mundane level, this many planets moving through serious, austere Capricorn terrain continue to call for an abundance of caution, adult, reasonable behavior, and mature, responsible attitudes. Capricorn asks us to behave as wise elders, connect with inner discipline, adjust to more time alone, and to move forward with dignity and self-respect, honoring strongly defined limits and boundaries – whether anyone else is watching or giving us credit for it or not.  Often we will need to do more with less.  It’s important not to go too far with spartan, self-denying attitudes which could lead to isolation.  Effort will likely be required to reach out, connect, and keep up with important self-caring activities.  In many ways, functional Capricorn energy teaches that the effort itself is the reward and that the ends do not justify the means.  Keep an eye on resentful moods that, on a deeper level, could serve to remind us of difficult past experiences when we might’ve felt forced to deal with limitations beyond our control.

THE GOOD NEWS: is much old energy is available to be healed and transformed as we complete these cycles in preparation for new systems and energies that are coming in the weeks and months ahead as three of these planets move from traditional Capricorn to innovative, future-oriented Aquarius this year!  Pluto will move into Aquarius in March 2023, shortly after the spring equinox.  Obviously, many of these shifts will take time yet, at the time of Equinox on Thursday, the Moon, which represents the public, will be in Aquarius, offering a preview of these shifts as it occupies the degree of the zodiac symbolized as a train entering a tunnel, thematically leading the rest of the planets forward into future territory.  Additionally, courage and strength are available as the Sun in pioneering, brave Aries creates a supportive relationship with sturdy Saturn in those very late degrees of Capricorn.  We could glimpse previews of newer ideas, structures and methods as Mercury, the communicator, associated with information, learning and commerce will be traveling through compassionate Pisces terrain and harmonizing with revolutionary Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius.

More good news! Venus is very strong at this Equinox, traveling through its home sign of earthy Taurus strengthening and encouraging our heartfelt appreciation of our true values, beauty, relationships and essential reverence for life.  Venus is under a bit of stress from the Moon, but relates beautifully with its cosmic lover, Mars, during this Equinox and both enfold ALL of the other planets in their cooperative embrace, symbolizing that a unified balance between masculine and feminine sensibilities and wisdom is required, and perhaps – AT LONG LAST– is coming into manifest fruitionSpiritual, boundless, mystical Neptune adds considerable grace, compassion, and angelic support to this divine union of Venus and Mars, as it sits half way between them occupying the degree of Pisces associated with a master teaching its pupil.
